What is a typical daily method of operation for a social marketer?
Ever wonder what a daily method of operation looks like for a social marketer? In traditional business you are juggling many different departments as a solo entrepreneur. You are the sales force, the marketing strategist, the research and development team, the social media team. In social marketing your sole purpose is marketing, and learning how to do it well. As a social marketer, it’s your job to show up consistently to build an audience and be an influencer. Now I’m not talking about traditional mlm or network marketing, where you are juggling social media and old school strategies of direct sales. I’m talking about building your business 100% online and what I do every day to make it happen. Let’s get started.

It all begins and ends in your mind. What you give power to has power over you.
Daily Method of Operation Phase 1: Mindset
If my head isn’t in the game, it makes this business so much harder than it needs to be. So I begin every day with intention. I use the 5 minute journal to:
Focus on the 3 things I’m grateful for
3 things I will do to make today great
Next I fire up my Kindle to read for 30 minutes while I enjoy my morning coffee. This gets the inspiration flowing and allows me to wake up slowly. Once I’m up I stretch, have breakfast, take my supplements, and I jump into my day. As a busy mom, sometimes I dive right into my work, but sometimes I need to take care of my family’s needs first. Daily Method of Operation Phase 2: Skillset
Depending on what day of the week it is, I am either listening to a live training by someone from our team or from our corporate team, or I search for a training on a skill I’m looking to sharpen. Regardless, I spend 30 minutes a day brushing up on my skills. If you have the right resources, this is a business where you can earn while you learn, and every day I’m implementing my new skill. If I find something that works really well, I will share this with my audience through my content. If you don't have access to great training for building online, jump over to my Facebook Fan Page and make sure you're following so you get notifications when I go live and when I announce a new training here on the blog.
Daily Method of Operation Phase 3: Create Content
Showing up consistently for your audience is where the magic happens. A lot of people will think, gosh, you create content every day? And I think, wow you commute every day to work 8-10 hours a day? It’s all perspective. If you want to build online, you have to create content and provide value or no one will know you or why they should invest in your business. Creating content is like a muscle, the more you exercise the skill, the stronger you will become at it. So create 1 new piece of content every day. Here are a few ideas and approximately how long it takes to create this type of content.
- FB Live: 20 min
- Curiosity Post : 5 - 10 min
- Blog: 30 min
- Video on Youtube: 30 min
Bonus Tip: If you're going to create video, just take a few minutes to outline some bullet points of what you want to say. Introduce yourself, dive into the content, deliver value, and share stories when you can.
I recommend mixing it up and sharing your content on a few different platforms so you can reach a larger audience. I also recommend creating content in a place where it's easy to find and use as a resource for your team. You want your content to help you leverage your time as much as possible. If you are new to this and just getting started, get a handle on 1 platform at a time, and then spread your wings. I post twice a day on every platform..but 80% of the time those posts are value driven, not promotional.
Daily Method of Operation Phase 4: Connect
We have a 5-5-3 method we use, so that this can be done inside of a power hour. Friend 5, connect with 5 and follow up with 3. But if you have ambitious goals and are looking to move fast through your compensation plan, you can for sure set a larger number goal. Set a goal to reach out and connect with 20 people a day. As Jim Rohn would say, In the beginning we make up for in numbers what we lack in skill. So until you’re batting averages improve, you want to focus on planting a lot of seeds and forming a lot of new relationships!
Ok so I know a lot of you are going to say, but Johanna, I don’t have time to do this. I’m so busy! Well guess what. If nothing changes, nothing changes. You have to take action and make this a priority if you want your life to look differently. It’s up to you to make it happen.

Let’s look at how long this actually takes in a day when you are focused. Let's say you divided your time into 30-60 minute blocks. Here's what your DMO might look like:
- Mindset 30 min
- Skillset 30 min
- Content 30 min
- Connect 60 min
Give or take from this road map, you could build a business in 2- 2.5 hours a day. It might take you a bit longer in the beginning to get good at some of these skills. Maybe you are super busy and you need to adjust your time commitment. But the more quickly you throw yourself into training and then implementing what you learn, the quicker you get results.
Maybe you only have 15-30 min time blocks. Perhaps building your business starts out like this:
- Mindset 15 min
- Skillset 15 min
- Content 15 min
- Connect 30 min
That means spending 1.25 hours per day. That’s just a bit longer than watching a show on netflix. Do this over time and you will see the compound effect of what can happen inside your business. Over time, you will have more success and hence more time to put into your growing business. Maybe you don’t have a solid 1-2 hour time block in your day..thats fine. Take 30 min in the morning, 30 min on your lunch break, and 1 hour in the evening. Whatever you need to do to make it work. Most people do not have a shortage of time, they have a shortage of time management skills.
Daily Method of Operation Bonus Tip: Be Resourceful
Work on your mindset while you are cooking or working out with an audible. Take 5 minutes to create a post and generate leads, and take the extra time you have to connect with your leads. Focus on skill set a couple of times a week by plugging into your team calls. Schedule your posts for the week on a Sunday so your content is done. Whatever you need to do to work this business into your life so you can start getting some results and start making the changes you need. Investing these small pockets of time consistently will help you generate an income and create more time freedom. You can always grow from there, but you have to start somewhere. You can work this business part time, but you can’t work it sometimes. If you treat it like a hobby, it will pay you like a hobby.
